I have spent this past year trying to see and do things differently. One of those things has been faux (fake) infrared pictures. I did faux infrared because I didn’t have a camera capable of doing the real thing and hadn’t since 2001 when I owned an infrared sensitive Minolta DiMAGE 7 that did infrared, albeit poorly (exposures took up to twenty seconds).

I had a spare camera body I wasn’t using converted to infrared this past month and it showed up today. I was excited because now I can do infrared quickly and easily. Yeah, no. The Missus and I walked to Kinsmen Park this evening so I could do some test shots. I learned that while I can do infrared quickly, it’s not going to be easy. It will take me a while to get past the learning curve.

We walked past a historic tree on Thomas Drive that I simply call That Tree on the way home and I tried to justice to it as well. Now that I’m looking at the image I’m not sure that justice was served.
I’m not happy with the colours as they’re coming off of the camera and I’ll have to tweak the custom white balance. It will also help to get some shots in bright sunlight rather than overcast. It’s a start, though. Right?

Professionally modded Canon EOS 7D with the hot mirror filter swapped out for a custom infrared glass filter and a Canon 17-85mm EF-S IS USM f4-5.6 lens used.
