A Bad Day With A Camera

I Go Where the Crowd Isn’t

The Northern Lights are out tonight as I am typing this post and the entire town is agog over them. Everyone with an iPhone is outside with it pointed straight up filling my Facebook feed with hundreds of mediocre pictures of boring borealis. I’m happy that they’re happy, but I’m not really interested in taking my own cameras out.

Municipal Building, Kinsmen Park, Strathmore, AB, 2024-10-07

I went out with The Missus this evening and got a nice, muted fall shot of Strathmore’s Municipal Building hovering my drone over the middle of Kinsmen Lake. I tend to prefer getting the shots that most people overlook and walk past, or who don’t have the technical acumen to get.

I don’t know if I’m just being contrary or what the case is, but whenever my friend Ray and I discussed what we enjoyed shooting — and that turned out to be a lot — we both agreed that photographers should follow their intrigue. Don’t pull out a camera and photograph something just because everyone else is if it doesn’t interest you. If you aren’t fascinated by what you’re shooting then how can you ever expect the viewer to be? There’s no authenticity.

It’s something I’d love to be chatting online with Ray about tonight, but there’s some irony here. I know he’d be out shooting the lights.

This evening’s image is courtesy of my DJI Mini 3 photography drone.
