It’s rather stupid, but the title of this post occurred to me and I thought, “that’ll do pig.” Then it hit me that while I know the saying a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, I have lived for over half a century without understanding what it actually means.
I just assumed it had something to do with hunting, which I have zero interest in, so I never bothered to learn what the saying meant. I decided to ask Meta AI:
The timing of this is interesting, as I am currently in a situation where I am choosing between the bird in my hand and the possibility of two birds from the bush if I take a risk. Who knew!
There are a lot of birds in my yard right now, and they’re not in the bushes. They can be found eating themselves silly in our two Mountain Ash trees that are full of plump berries. The berries that survived “the storm” at least. The robins in particular seem to be fattening up for their flight south.
As for the birds themselves, a berry in the mouth seems to be worth two more in the tree and they’ll eat those next. I’m sure birds have their own problems, but I doubt they have to worry about the consequences of taking risks and crashing afterward like humans do. Unless they overeat and are unable to take off, I guess.
