Sometimes I look at something that I’m only sort of interested in photographing and then I think of a name for the photograph that is pretty good, and I am suddenly committed to capturing the image. That’s what happened this afternoon.
There was a Volkswagen Beetle resting on two stacked tractor tires and it was sort of cute, but the background was gross and the sky was gross and the entire scene was, well, gross. But I had thought of several good titles, so…
I had headed to Mossleigh, Alberta, to try and get some images of the three grain elevators there with lots of pretty white snow around. There wasn’t that much pretty white snow left and what I saw in my headset from the drone’s camera was gross. I didn’t bother taking any photos of the elevators. The sky did look interesting on the way back so I scooted west on a side road to try and find a sky shot I liked. I was not having any luck and after a kilometre I was running out of road.
The problem was that it was a shit road. Compounding matters, I was driving Vlad the Impala, which has 50 series, all-season tires. Not a good choice for a road with snow-filled ditches. I had hoped to find a spot to safely turn around, but there was none. I wound up backing up about a kilometre to the highway.
Vlad’s booty sits rather high, which limits the view out the back window to the extent that you can tell if there is a semi truck behind you, but not much else. It is especially bad for backing up. Good thing for side mirrors.
My last photographic opportunity of the day was encountering a train on the way home. I’m always happy to bump into a train as it’s a good opportunity to play with motion. Or it would have been if I had brought a spare battery for my Canon G1X. The G1X was only along as a spare camera in case I couldn’t use my drone, which I had expected to be my primary camera for the outing. Anyhow, I had just got my settings dialed in for the train shot and was looking for a car with lots of graffitti to photograph when my camera powered down. What I got was all I got.
It did occur to me on the way home that my whiz bang Samsung mobile camera can supposedly do motion blurred images as well. I should look into that, huh?
Today’s images from my Canon Powershot G1X save for the Impala image. I don’t remember what camera that came from some years back.
