This is apparently the longest inland curved wharf in North America. I believe it. I can also tell you that when you have walked partway out onto the wharf just after sunset without putting on bug repellent the wharf feels 3x longer. I still have some of the bug bites showing on me. Finally, I get honourable mention because for someone who can’t run, I made damn good time back to my car to get the tube of Deet cream.
We had dinner with my brother-in-law and his family at an Italian place in Salmon Arm that was too loud and priced themselves out of their league. I’m sorry, but for what they were charging I expect scratch made pasta and Alfredo sauce with flavour. Their cook (I refuse to use the word chef) can’t even operate a salt shaker properly. They served tiramisu that was only loosely based on the original concept. No espresso flavour. No rum flavour. The cheapest chocolate possible used in it. Phooey. Anyhow, after that, we all went for a walk on the wharf. (I keep wanting to type it as Worf, this is is what happens when you watch too much Trek.)
For all of those people who have spent the past half century and change wishing I would take a long walk off a short pier: Sorry to disappoint. I’m still here. Mosquitoes aside, it was a nice stroll at the end of the day.
We were there with my brother-in-law’s new girlfriend, Christine, and her children Jackson (6) and Aiylet (12). Jackson is one of those kids who was born with a start button, but not a stop button. He is also adorable and he knows it. Aiylet is smart, sweet, and a good big sister to Jackson. I enjoyed meeting them. The best part is that my bro-in-law looks very happy having them around, and it is nice to see him getting a slice of serenity. The past years have been rough on him.
I did my usual thing when I wasn’t slapping at mosquitoes, and that was to photograph the living shit out of everything around me. My hit rate wasn’t great because it was dark and I was using my mobile phone. A dSLR on a tripod would have given better results but I brought minimal photography gear with me since space was at a premium (we had three paddle boards crammed in the trunk of Vlad the Impala). Some of the shots are a bit imperfect, but in photography you use what you have and you take what you are given. I am still happy with the images.
My hope is to take another run at the wharf with proper gear on a future trip, but I will be sure to put on bug repellent first before I do anything else.
All images from my Samsung Galax S23 Ultra and not the Canon EOS 50D in my car because I cheaped out on space for the tripod I needed. Damn it.
