I changed up lenses again today. I may have had the bubble bokeh lens out again over lunch, but there are now baby ducks in the irrigation canal and that can only mean one thing. It is time for the JBFL (Jayzus Frakkin’ Big Lens) to come out and play.
The JBFL is a Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 Contemporary DG OS HSM lens. It is a beast, especially when paired with the Sigma 1.4x teleconverter that was made to work with it. I end up with 840mm total reach. It gives me lightning fast focus when combined with the AI-trained eye-tracking servo focus in my R5. I just had to point it at birds and the focusing was entirely automatic. God bless modern technology.
The AI autofocus is so good it was able to pick out and track the partially concealed female yellow-capped blackbird hiding in the grass at the side of the canal near where she has laid her eggs.
On the other end of the tech scale I used my TTArtisan bubble bokeh lens which is not only manual focus, but also has a 60s/70s vintage M42 mount. I have no idea what prompted that design choice, but it’s a fun lens to use when you start to get the hang of it, which I am.
While it was mostly duck that was on tonight’s menu, I was pleased to discover a pair of blossoming trees that I had previously missed along Thomas Drive. They are still in decent shape. I only took a quick telephoto grab of one this evening so I wouldn’t forget them later. Not Great Art, but I will certainly be back tomorrow at my lunch break to work them with the Bubble Bokeh and Reversed Helios lenses. I am pretty certain I’ll have the JBFL along as well because quackers.
Today was a great day. I am thankful to be feeling better after this week’s flu battle, and out and about with cameras again.
Todays images were made using my Canon EOS R5 with my Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 Contemporary DG OS HSM lens. A 1.4x teleconverter was added to the JBFL to extend its reach to 840mm effective. It is bad ass. The TTArtisans 100mm f2.8 bubble bokeh lens, M42 mount with an M42 to RF lens adapter, also saw some action.
